Sutton Baptist Church newspaper clipping query

Mike Towers sent the following clipping, date unknown but possibly 1950s, showing what appears to be a list of names and results for Sutton Baptist Church and other local churches. Can anyone offer an explanation?

In the olden days there was an annual Scripture Exam for sunday-school scholars, typically sat on a Friday night in spring/summer as I recall.

It consisted of a written exam of biblical questions and (I think) a recitation. My apologies for being vague, but it was about 65 years ago!

The annual Baptist scripture exams described by Howard were still being held in 1969, post olden days, but not by much ,-)

Thankfully, there was a wait of about six weeks before they announced the results, because I wasn’t looking forward to knowing my score. I wiggled out of going to chapel on the Sunday of the big announcement. The minister read out everybody’s grades during open service, my dad returning home and popping a half crown in my hand to my astonishment.

Another six weeks later, there was a major Boys Brigade awards ceremony in the old chapel. The captains gave trophies from the stage for the highest scores, according to various age groups with engraved names and the year of the award on the cups. Each winner could keep his trophy for twelve months before returning it for the next year’s awards. The Girls Brigade must have held a similar event following the scripture exams.

Interesting that they printed the results in the papers.
