Shields displayed on the home page
Hi Paul (webmaster)

Just out of curiosity, their are 2 shields containing a cross in the top right & top left corners of the home page of this website. Is this icon specific to Sutton or is it just a generic symbol?

Hi Andrew

It's the cross moline of the Copley family, as marked on numerous boundary stones around the village.

Steve Copley, a descendant of the Copley family, contacted me in 2007 and provided a copy of the family coat of arms. Prior to this I used the Vavasour family coat of arms.

More details on the following page in the history section:

A Township of Two Manors

Chapter 21 of the 1927 History of Sutton (also in the history section) contains the following:

"The family of Copley of Batley had at one time large possessions in the part of he Aire Valley. In the 14th century a Copley was living at Farnhill Hall, another at Glusburn Hall and yet another, Robert Copley, occupied Malsis Hall in Sutton township. For nearly 300 years some member of the Copley family lived at Malsis Hall, and the name is frequently found in local documents of the Middle Ages. John the son of Adam de Copley was lord of the Manor of Sutton in 1381."

Thanks Paul, that answers my question very nicely. I strongly suspected the cross icon must be of local significance but I wasn't sure. A nice piece of Sutton history dating back many centuries :-)
