Sutton Girls 1911 - photo submitted by Tony Ingham
The girls appear to be Morris Dancers, with decorated hoops. Although the decorated cross is something of a puzzle - perhaps they were part of an Easter parade? The crenelated towers of the archway to Sutton Hall (Hall Drive) and the roof top and chimneys of one of the lodges can just be made out behind the wall. I believe that the photograph must have been taken from somewhere at the back of Overburn (bottom of Ellers Road) and that the wall has since been demolished.

I think you're right Robin, there's a photo of girl Morris Dancers c1911 in the 'People' section of the Glyn Whiteoak collection and the right-most girl with the hoop looks to be in both.

I have just seen the photograph of the brass band in North Road. Whilst it is nigh on impossible to identify any of the musicians I am prepared to guess at one. The young lad in the centre of the picture with short trousers looks very much like Keith Reddiough. He did play eventually with, I think, Haworth Brass Band. If it is he then the photograph is about ten years prior to the date given.
Does anyone have access to Keith who could ask him?
These pictures keep rolling in, thanks to all who send them and stir up the memories.

Alan, I understand that Ken Davy, who played the trumpet, is one of the band members. Ken was one of Leonard Davy's sons. The Davy's lived at Low Fold House. I will ask Yvonne Salt (Leonard's grandaughter) if she can get any information from Ken about the band and date. Keith has no further information on it.

Alan/Robin, I'm on the case. I've sent my Uncle Ken an email and will post information as soon as he replies.

Just recieved reply from my Uncle Ken (Kenneth Davy) with information on the photograph of the brass band in Low Fold:-

.....the Brass Band in Low Fold was Cowling Band at Sutton Gala 1949. Taken by Len Walton (Wacker), also one of the Top Co-op Band members.

Maybe Joan Tinsdale from Cowling could identify some band members.

Have we arranged a date for the unveiling of the plaque memorising the additional Fallen of Sutton from WW1 ?
