Gallery. - Long serving employees, T & M Bairstow.
Can anyone put names to those portrayed? I can remember many of the faces but can only name one, Mr. Ridsdale, second from the left on the back row. Even then it is unusual to see him without his cap. I worked for a short while in the office at the mill in the late 50's and have mixed memories of so doing. |

my maternal grandfather Edmund (eddie) Walmsley started work at Bairstow's in 1929 under the wing of Mr Nutter and retired in 1966 as chief engineer after 37 continuous years at the mill, in his later years also helping out with fireman duties at hartley's, with arthur snookes one of his off-siders, but unfortunately he hated his photograph being taken and missed out on the long serving employees photo shoot. According to my mum he even cancelled the photographer at his wedding much to the dismay of my grandmother, Selina, nee Cooper. He is mentioned in Doris Rileys book a couple of times. We also are lucky to own a couple of inscribed gifts from the mill presented to my grandad for his 25th years service and on his retirement. I have lots of happy memories being taken on tours of the mill as a very young boy with him, always being told to the employees everywhere as a future worker. |

The man seated front left is my Grandad Spencer Heaton. He started working
half-days in the mill at Bairstows aged ten, after he started full-time employment
he was given a job in the general office because of his immaculate copper-plate
Hand-writing and worked till he retired aged 81, a total of 71 years with one
employer! In 1957 he was offered a holiday anywhere in the world, but because
my Grandma was so crippled by Arthiritis they settled for a week in Morecambe!
It became national news & I only found out about it when I saw his photograph
on Morecambe Sands in the Daily Express, as I was doing National Service at the
time. The Mayor of Morecambe was so pleased with the publicity, that he sent
the Mayoral car for both journeys
I think the man standing back right was Arthur Cockshott who lived in Eastfield
