Sutton Park Boating lake
I'm just writing a comment to vent my frustration at the pettiness regarding the "boating lake" in sutton park. over the last few days with the recent fantastic weather the lake has been full of water, which has attracted lots of people to our park to enjoy theirselves and even have a paddle/water fight in the water. Imagine, then, how surprised I was to learn that the clerk has given the word for the lake to be emptied, due to complaints that some people MAY have contracted sickness and diahorrea due to going in the water. I know that the water is fed into the lake from the beck, as it has been for years, and there are notices up telling people this. Surely, then, it should be left up to each individual person to decide whether they let their child paddle in the water or not, and not left up to one person to decide for everybody? I have heard lots more people complaining that the water has been emptied out than about water being left in! |

Hi Debbie, are you sure it isn't a case of the park-keeper following standard procedure and draining the pool after a couple of days and letting it dry out completely before refilling in order to prevent the growth of blue-green algae?
Conditions this week have been ideal for allowing blue-green algae to bloom and rise in concentration rapidly.
Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) poses a real health risk and can be fatal to pets.

Hi Paul,
I believe this gets done regularly anyway as a matter of course, but I was actually in the pavillion this morning at our weekly toddler group when we were told that a complaint had gone in, and that he had to empty it on the parish council orders.
The park keeper has told me that water was put into the lake on tuesday, then he emptied it on wednesday night, swept it on thursday morning before refilling it that same day. He has since told me that the environment agency will be calling this afternoon to test it to make sure it is safe before refilling it again.
Regarding the blue-green algae, i have been reliably informed that this would only be able to develop in stagnant/stationary water, but the water in the boating lake is constantly running, gets stirred up by people paddling in it anyway, and is emptied out and replaced regularly, so not likely to develop.
Can i take this opportunity to commend the park staff on the fantastic job they do. The park is always clean and tidy, well kept and as a result well used. Many people travel from a distance to use our park and the facilities it offers, and we should be very proud of it and rightly so. |

I guess that the park staff are being careful in response to the feedback they have had. There are at least 22 children poorly in one of the village's schools - I don't know if there are any in other local schools - and other than the school premises, the other connecting factor is that they have all been playing in the boating lake.
My daughter is poorly, I'm not particularly concerned where it has come from and have no desire to try to blame any one thing, I just hope that everyone is soon better and it doesn't affect too many more people. I imagine whoever contacted them with this information is just trying to prevent a spread & enable action to be taken if this has been the causative factor.
I love our park and too think that the park staff do a fantastic job in making it such a welcoming place. Once she is better she'll be back playing in the boating lake. . . we just hope the sun stays out for long enough! |

There just could be a bug going around - personaly I dont think its the beck/boating lake. Any the guys in the park are fantastic - no wonder the development companies want to over develop the village, but hey thats another issue!
