Baptist Chapel Graveyard
I went to visit a family grave today (50+ miles round trip) and found the Graveyard securely locked up. No work was being carried nor was there any indication of when the Yard will be able to be accessed again. I guess this is 'Elf and Safety'? If the Notice stated you enter at your own risk I don't see what the problem is? I am able-bodied so I climbed the gate but those less nimble would have had a disappointing trip. There were no more hazards than usual but I note more gravestones have been 'flattened'.

I had the same experience a couple of months ago. Mine was a 320 mile round trip but to be honest, I had other things to do. I did exactly the same - I climbed the gate and wandered around for half an hour but before doing so I phoned the number given on the notice to advise them that I wasn't going to be thwarted. A couple of days later I received a reply and, yes you are correct, it is a health and safety issue. But I found it sad that the site was in such a sorry state.

This begs the question ~ how long has it been locked/when is the work due to be completed by?

Not in any way referring to this particular graveyard or query - but everyone do pls. keep an eye on your family graves and others - I witnessed a chap stealing gravestones from graves in the graveyard next door to us last year- recognised him - an " ex grave digger"- so he is familiar with our graveyards and churches - despite the police doing their best - he did in fact get away with it in the end- and the chapel had to claim from their own insurance! During the last few weeks stone flags have even been stolen from Manorlands Hospice!

On the day of the Memorial Service I again visited the Chapel graveyard and note that, although it was unlocked, its condition had deteriorated even further. More stones have now been flattened and left where they fell.
Specifically I am concerned that the grave of Percy Hargreaves, who died from injuries in WW1 is marked on a gravestone and it is now on the edge of what looks like a clearance zone. I believe he is not the only WW1 soldier with a grave marker in the Chapel yard. There seems to be little respect for the dead.
I was informed that there is a 'plan' for the graveyard. I sent an email to the Vicar but I have not had a response. Does anyone know what the 'plan' is and when it is intended to be completed?

My grandparents are buried in the Baptist Chapel graveyard. When I visited their grave some years ago I was dismayed to see the graveyard in a sorry state with grass so long I could hardly find the grave. Is there a problem of lack of funds to keep the graveyard in good repair?

The Baptist Chapel graveyard is a total disgrace. I hadn't paid a visit for years until last year and I was horrified to find it had been left to deteriorate to such a condition. I too emailed the Reverend and as yet have had no response. It not only shows lack of respect for the generations before us but lack of respect for our village. Most villagers are unaware of the condition of the graveyard but surely 'who-ever' is in charge of the Chapel should be taking action to correct the problem.

Who is in charge?

Hi Janet
No I don't where the grave plan is, but burials are still taking place, although they do seem to be on the left hand side of the graveyard, what would happen if a family member did want to be buried in a family grave, someone must have the details somewhere, and I would have thought the Chapel would have them.

To Janet, Josie, Yvonne and all interested in the Baptist Graveyard Topic,
My Brother and I visited there on Monday 8th to see if we could find our relatives, old friends and neighbours etc.after Yvonne's earlier message.
To our amazement the grass had been mown, and other than many stones were a little topsy and some leant against the wall, we were able to walk around (my brother has difficulty walking and I am not much better) and spot a number of people we knew. I don't think Allan had been there for many years. I had been to a Sunday service in 2012, but had not visited the graveyard, as both my parents were cremated. One we did not find, was our Uncle Edward Bracewell. So I will contact the site Josie gave. I am quite happy for Paul to give my email out if you require it for any further posts.
I must appologise to many for not contacting them, whilst in Sutton, but I had to shorten my time over there due to booking problems.

Hi David

The Bracewell grave is down the right hand side of the graveyard by the wall. On one side is a Whiteoak grave and the other side is a Sutcliffe grave, it wasn't possible to get an accurate reading, but the names were Herbert born 1877, Jane his wife, Ellen their daughter and Edward their son, hope this helps.

Hi Josie,
I don't think we got right over there.
I paid to download the Craven indexes, but when the down loading was on it sent my laptop into an epilectic fit and have shut down, and when I try to open the DL it goes off again, so haven't seen the grave stone inscriptions yet. Any one any ideas?

Hi David

The Sutton Baptist Memorial Inscriptions are not on the CD download.

Keighley Family History Society did them just after I had transcribed them, and were for sale through the society in booklet form. Check out the website for the details and costs.

I don't repeat work that anyone else is doing or may have done, but I can use my own transcriptions for queries.

Regards
Josie

I visited the Chapel graveyard yesterday and I was horrified to see that the even some small, modern gravestones have been vandalised by the uncaring 'Health & safety' vandals.
I note that even the grave of the family of Percy Hargreaves, which is clearly inscribed to state he died in the war, has now been dislodged.
The disrespect being shown to the dead who have contributed to their Country, the Chapel and the village is unbelievable.
Old tyres and edge stones are scattered randomly around the area. They obviously aren't a tripping hazard?
What can be done to stop this continued distruction?

Good idea Derek but what a huge task. Jean McClennon and I have spent many happy hours there armed with gardening tools clearing brambles and ivy from the headstones to be able to photograph the stones before the inscriptions are eroded. However, Mother Nature is winning. I do tidy the two graves of distant ancestors in the north west section. We would both be happy to offer what little help we could. Is it possible to apply for finance from the Lotto charity or elsewhere to employ a team of experts to restore the whole graveyard? Please keep me/us informed.
