Coronation Bonfire
If my memory serves me correctly, it was on 2nd June 1953, Coronation Day, when the village celebrated the event with goings on in the park and with a huge bonfire at the top of West Lane. I was one of a number of runners who carried a torch which was lit in the park, through the village, past the Black Bull and the Kings Arms, all the way up to the top West Lane. I remember that my section of the relay run was the particularly hard, steep section beyond Bank Foot Farm - the section that incorporates the double bend. I was shattered when I handed over to the next runner. Roger Barrett? Does anyone else remember taking part in this historic event or indeed taking part in any other events held on that day nearly sixty six years ago? |

I remember that day- just! I attended Sutton County Primary School and we had competitions for fancy dress and the best decorated doll's pram. I received a coronation mug and a spoon in a presentation in the school and I think there may have been a tea. We watched the coronation ceremony, together with nearly all of Holme Lane,or so it seemed,round a very small television belonging to our neighbours- the Blackie family. |

The Coronation bonfire torch carrying team included You and I, Colin Pickles, Michael Lynch, Michael Garnett, Peter Garnett, Peter Barsby, Niel Palfreman, John Barret and the one that you wrongly named, Robert ( not Roger) Barret. I don't think I missed anyone out but just one maybe. I think that Robert was the one responsible for lighting the fire. The fire was built on a piece of spare land on the right-hand side of the road going up the hill, just on from the corner. I think this has now been gated off. |
