David Smith - 19th C Photographer
The recent photographs sent into the Gallery by Mike Towers includes one marked 'D. Smith Sowerby Bridge'. It shows a view from the top end of Harper Square looking across the fields to West Lane - now occupied by the Hall Estate. David Smith was born in Sutton and took up photography in the mid 1860's. He moved to Sowerby Bridge but returned to the village periodically and set up temporary studios. Some of his photos are marked Sutton & Crosshills, Sowerby Bridge and Bingley, where he lived in his latter years.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has any other photographs of the village by him.
