Amateur astronomer new to the area looking to make new friends.
Hi all,

I'm a bloke in my 50's and new to the area looking to make new friends, I'm an amateur astronomer with a 2 fairly sophisticated telescopes and wondered if there are any other like minded people locally who fancy meeting up ?

I don't have my own transport but would love to take my telescopes the countryside away from street lighting (just 2 or 3 miles away from Sutton would be ideal)

I'm prepared to share travel costs, anyone locally willing to supply the transport and I'll supply the telescope ?

The equipment I have is suitable for astrophotography and I'm more than happy to allow people have a go at photography using my set up in return for transport help.

If you are interested please email Peter at Gas_mantle@yahoo.co.uk. and I can supply further contact details etc.

Thanks
Peter Nichols :-)

Firstly, Welcome!

You'll probably want to get in tough with the Keighley Astronomical Society. A quick search should throw up a contact number for them.

Hi Peter, if I still lived in Sutton I would definitely take up your offer and have a sticky beak at the night skies through one of your telescopes.

I used to have a 3 and a quarter inch Newtonian reflector telescope when I was 16. I'd set it up in the back garden at the top of Harper Grove in Sutton and focus in on the rings of Saturn and 4 of the moons of Jupiter, plus countless other spectacles in the night sky - distant galaxies and such like.

I bought a similar sized telescope for my son when he was around 16 also, but the light pollution from the city of Adelaide meant we had to drive 2 or 3 hours away from the city to achieve optimal viewing of the night skies. Anyway, happy viewing and I'm sure you'll meet other like minded amateur astronomers in the area ,-)

Hi Andrew,

I agree the light pollution can be a big problem in built up areas :-(

If ever you do come back to the UK on a visit give me a shout, I'm sure we can arrange to meet up.

Peter :-)
