David,
Here I sit with bated breath and can find nothing to get the grey matter moving. Come on, get your act together and let's see the faces.

Dr John Laycock sent me four new Sutton County Primary School photos from the 1950s, all need names! There are three class photos and a football team photo. I've given each person a number, if you can identify any pupils, teachers or (in two cases) the year, please let me know. Three of the four images can be "zoomed".

Reference the new photos:- Stanley Bell's class 195?. I think that 205 is David McWhinney and 212 is Stuart Wilson. I don't know if they are of an age and Stuart is the one that I would be more certain of.
The class of 1951 shows one face that I am certain of, 426 is Pauline Robson without a doubt.
These photos were taken after I had gone to Keighley and when the people concerned are younger than me I have difficulty in putting names to them. I doubt that Denis will be able to name any. Perhaps Pauline will take up where I have left off and name the entire class.
Best of luck.

I've got some that I'm pretty sure about. 202 & 330 are Christine Thompson. 221 & 316 are Jean Hardaker. 219 & 317 are Linda Barrett. 318 is Elizabeth chadwick and 319 is Robina Pighills. Most of these are about 2 or 3 years older than me and although I recognise some more faces I cannot put names to them.

Here are just a couple more 204 & 333 -Lorraine Watson, 206 - Eileen Harper, 210-Elizabeth Chadwick and 337 - Barry McWhinney.
Once the 'delayed coverage' in my head clears I may be able to name a few more. In the meantime I will ask my younger sisters to have a look.

How right you are Alan. Just two faces that I recognise, Sidney Laycock - because he lived close by in Bent Lane, and John Stanley Bell who, in the early 50's, used to put his arm round me on a Saturday afternoon when we together formed the second row of the Keighlians RUFC scrum.

The group in John Stanley Bell's class were two years ahead of me. I therefore date the photograph as being the class of 57.

Hello Howard, Is the "old bird" at the opposite end to Syd, Ma Mullen? She wasn't there a lot, as though she may have been supply staff. Still think the other lass is Elizabeth Chadwick.

Melvyn,

Elizabeth Chadwick has been identified in the 1957 photograph by someone other than me. That girl doesn't look like the same person as the one you believe to be Chad. Further, I believe David Laycock's response above is relating to the same person and names her as Carol Grosvenor. I previously indicated that these classes were two years ahead of me (and you I believe), so I never knew Carol, hence didn't recognise her.

David Laycock's response also dismissed himself as being the person bearing his name. However, I believe Dr John Laycock's brother was called David and 104 in the football team is a dead ringer of Dr John. Given that Margaret Windsor, nee Rishworth named 425 as David Laycock, are 104 and 425 the same person?

I am surprised nobody has recognised 307/110 because of the distinct fair hair. I don't but I do recall two Yelland brothers being in the school, perhaps with first names John and David. The family emigrated to the Antipodes, Oz I believe. Does it ring any bells with anyone?

Further, in mentioning the Antipodes, I recall brothers Michael and Donald Sugden in the school and their family emigrated to Tasmania I think. Is 105 the elder of those two brothers?

Some readers might be interested to learn that the two Sutton schools were combined infants and primary schools, offering a seamless transition between the two, whereas Glusburn school was an infants and secondary school in the same building, prior to South Craven being built. Most of the Glusburn and Crosshills kids went to Glusburn school from age 5 to 7, then were transferred to Sutton from age 7 to 11-plus, to lead a "persona non grata" kind of existence. Those who didn't go on to either a Grammar School or Keighley Technical School returned to Glusburn to complete their secondary education.

This explains why the later photographs don't contain exactly the same cohort as the earlier one, because the Glusburn kids had joined them.

hi guys - these photos are beyond my era at Sutton Council School - however I agree with Howard that the girl identified as Carol Grosvenor is NOT Elizabeth Chadwick - the other photo where Elizabeth appears is numbered '210' in the back row along with my sister Eileen Harper, I believe that one is correct and also on the photo of Sutton Girl Guides 1959 Elizabeth appears - she does not really resemble the girl identified as Carol G (who I don't know incidentally)
Thanks for the additional information Howard. And, I am amazed at your (and Christine's) ability to identify so many people. Thanks again for your input.

I .presume Carol Grosvenor is Barry Grosvenor's sister. I say this because she certainly has similar facial features to Barry when he was boy.

Brenda,

It's a pity that I can't remember what happened 53 hours ago as well as I seem to remember things 53 years ago! It can't be my age because I've looked this old for years!

Christine and I were a couple of years below the class in question, but we knew many of those that we identified for reasons not connected with the school. In fact several of them were part of the second wave of YPF members. I suppose I bridged the two, having been to Winton with several of those on the YPF photographs filed in the gallery. Also, given that siblings were usually spaced 2-3 years apart, we had some of the siblings of the class of 57 in with us in the class of 59.

There hasn't been much response from those actually in the class of 57 has there? They should be able to clear up the few missing names in an instant. They didn't used to be particularly backward at coming forward.

As a Keighley lad who had relatives and friends in the Sutton area many years ago, I was pleased to stumble on this website and had a good browse.
The title of this thread interested me in particular since I had a good friend at secondary school called Tony Pickles. I found two references to a "Tony Pickles" in postings by Howard Barrett :-
"Names for John Stanley Bell's class:
213 Tony Pickles
Class with lady teacher and Sydney Laycock:
311 Tony Pickles"
On checking the photos I found that this was the Tony Pickles I knew.
Does anyone know of his current whereabouts, or have any information about Tony later than 1966?
