Thompson’s ran two businesses in Sutton, one a Coal Merchants then a Coach and Taxi business.
With the coach business they had the monopoly by licence to operate in this area so no other coach firm could advertise trips Hutchinsons of Eastburn for example had to sell by word of mouth.
Alec Thompson along with brother Brian ran the firm Alecs son Brian worked there Johnston Sharp I believe was also a driver.
The business operated from the Victoria building in Sutton Mill recently burnt down.

One of their coal wagons was converted to a coach at the weekend in the summer. they also had a garage for 2 coaches at the back of the king's arms.

p.s. One for Joan. in 2008 you enquired on the whereabouts of the Bairstow 1938 plaque, I have it pulled it out of the demolition in 1972.

Terry,
The coach garage was at the side of the Bull public house and not at the rear of the Kings Arms.

In the 1950's and early 60's Thompson's coach garage was in North Road and adjoined the King's Arms. We lived opposite it at Rose Cottage (now Alister House). It was a large wooden shed painted in battleship grey and was pulled down in the late 1960's about the time they widened the road to access Manor Way and the new estate.

Bowhill was the garage below the Bull, it was built to house the steam wagon that belonged to Hartley's mill
