Photos of sledging in Thompson's field

I've received the following from the Parish Council

Could anyone who has photos showing people sledging in Thompson's Field (long shots that show the activity and the location rather than close ups which do not show the identity of the location), please submit them to the Clerk at this email address:

Paul,
I appreciate that this is not the intended reaction to this request but --
Should anyone have any photos as requested could they be published on the website? If only to satisfy the nostalgia of myself and others who might just remember those activities.
Alan.

I think we had this request about a year ago. Presumably no photos were forthcoming. Like Alan, I certainly remember sledging down Thompson's Field in the 60s like it was yesterday, but no photos unfortunately.

Cant seem to start a thread up for some reason. Ain't going to be no more sledging there. Just come past now and it looks like something from area 51 with great big red notice bosrds gojng up round perimeter of field stating to keep out / private land. All seems a bit extreme to me!!!

It's not just extreme, it's extremely petty. I sledged in there over 70 years ago,
and as far back as people can remember it's been a popular field for sledging.
If whoever has put the signs there are trying to annoy people, they have
certainly succeeded!

It wouldn't do for the planning inspector to see loads of villagers enjoying themselves sledging in the field when he visits! Even though it's been going on for generations, ie it's a TRADITION. I will add a photo of one of the offending signs to the site.

If anyone has at any time sledged or taken part in any other recreational activity (bonfire, village fete, used the pod etc) in Thompson's Field, please post an anecdote here together with the year(s).

Its very petty - I think the signs are also unsightly and spoil the aesthetics of the area and are distracting to drivers. How/who do I need to complain to?

Paul,
This land has been used for far more than sledging. It was the venue for the Chapel activities ever since I can remember. If you look back through the photos in "The Gallery" you will find photographs and films which show all sorts of activities. Obviously the family Thompson would have given permission for them but what a turn around they are now showing. Is it that someone has waved a cheque book under their noses? Do those named on the signs still live in the village? Little Arthur Thompson must be spinning like mad. BEST OF LUCK TO SUTTON VILLAGERS, hope that you win your battle eventually.

Alan - yes, something has definitely caused a change of heart - going back about three or four years when the Village Committee was no longer allowed to have the Bonfire in the field. Those named on the signs do live in the village, not too far from Thompson's Field.

The children of this village have used this field for sledging for years and years, i think it is so sad and very petty. The signs are a total eye sore and should be removed. The local people should stand up for their village and the old traditions.

My friends and I went to many a good Bonfire here in the 50s/60s but we didn't have cameras so sadly no photos. I think that is probably the same with a lot of the kids who sledged there and that's why photos are not forthcoming? The Thompson family were good people - shame it's come to this!

I think you will find that I took sledging photos on 5th Jan 2010. There are six photos on the external link to my photos. If anyone can print them out please feel free. Barbara.

Great photos of sledging in Thompson's Field cuz, plus all the other snowy snaps.

Just to clarify, the external link to your photos can be found in the gallery. Silly me went searching for them in the Links to External Sites!
