Hitchingstone - Is it in Sutton or Cowling? or neither!
Hi, I'm just interested to know the precise location of Hitchingstone. Does it lie within the parish boundary of Sutton (like Cowling pinnacle does), or is it situated within the parish of Cowling? Or perhaps it’s in Keighley territory?

I thought I’d previously read something about Hitchingstone in the history section and/or seen a photo of it in the gallery, but I can’t find anything and I have had a good look!

Hi Andrew - it's on the border between Sutton, Keighley and Cowling.

There's a Cross Moline mark of the Copley family carved on top so it's been a boundary stone since medieval times, probably longer. Sutton Ramblers walked there recently, there are some photos on this page...

Thanks very much Paul, so it's a boundary stone. Looking at the images, that's the first time I've seen the name carvings on the floor in the hole on the west face from 1881: T. Silverwood, W.H. Snowden, S. Snowden and J.W. Tell.

I've just tried searching for the names on the 1881 census (which I'm sure has been attempted before), but with not much success. Too many possibilities to narrow the search down to particular individuals, certainly in the absence of Christian names.

Definitely an enigmatic boulder the old Hitchingstone and on my list of sights to re-visit next time I'm in the Craven.

Would someone please send me the scan of the photo of the names engraved in 1881 as a lady (from Sutton) has told me about this lately, and I would like to send the scan on to her daughter so that she can print it out for her. She has a neighbour a"Snowden" who would also be interested. Thanks.

Thanks very much for scan to Paul and Suttom Ramblers - never seen the carvings but had been told about them only recently - have now forwarded to Elaine for her Mum, and when time will do some research on the names - think the last name will be J. W. Teal! So nice that people share their photos - especially for those who cannot walk that far - but might like to?
