Family history-Thompsons/Hargreaves
I am researching my family history, I am looking at Thompson's and Hargeaves.
The Thompsons were Arthur- born 1913, Walter-born 1879,Greenwood-born 1850, they were all farmers. I also have information that Greenwood Thompson and his wife Sarah Briggs lived at Bay Horse Inn. Walter married Clara Hargreaves-born1884, her father was called James and was possibly a stone mason.
Places mentioned by elderley relatives are 'The nest', Royd Hill?,Summerhouse Farm (up Ellers), Knowle Court, Sutton Mill. I also have a photo of a grave stone of James Thompson of Sutton Mill died 1890 aged 47, His Wife Sarah Ann died 1923 aged 79, daughter Edith Ann died 1906 aged 36, Matilda died 1926 aged 53.
Any information would be greatfully received.

Hi Caroline
Clara Hargreaves married to a Thompson is on my family tree. I don't know anything about her but James, her father was b ?1852 d 4th September 1900 and I believe he was married to Hannah b 1833 d 29th Jan 1920? I believe she had a sister Anne Elizabeth, a brother Frank who died in infancy and a sister Florence Beatrice? James used to have a grave in the baptist Chapel which I believe is one of the stones which were regrettably removed. I don't know what happened to them. I remeber other Hargreaves gravestones were there. Sadly no markers were put in place to indicate where the removed gravestones were. The hargreaves family were regular attenders at the Baptist Chapel.
Hope this is helpful?

Hi Janet
There is still a gravestone in Sutton Baptist graveyard for James Hargreaves, Hannah and Frank in D plot no 16 behind the chapel.
James Hargreaves married a lady called Hannah Nixon in 1876.

Arthur Thompson used to farm at Holme Bridge. His sons. Alan and Leonard are still about in the Sutton area. Alan farms somewhere up the bottom end of Lothersdale Road. I think that Leonard sold up and retired some years ago. Hope that someone living in Sutton will pick up on this and help further.

Was Arthur Thompson the blind farmer?

Maurice,
I do not recall Arthur Thompson being blind but I do know that he wore bottlebottom specs. He was a little man who worked hard and enjoyed his Saturday evenings out at the Conservative Club in Crosshills. My Dad and Tom Crossley used to ensure that he got home then they would ring the doorbell and run to a safe distance to make sure he was taken in. Not a lot changes does it?

Sounds like the same guy......he used to come over the border to our house in Burnroyd Avenue in Crosshills on Sunday mornings......my dad used to cut his hair (don't recall him having much) and give him a shave.

Maurice,
Atkinson, of course you must be Irene Atkinson's little brother. I had forgotten that your father was a barber. Wasn't he the gentleman that worked for Percy Mewies? How is Irene? Please would you ask if she can name the girl in Mrs Belton's class on the back row. Sorry for digressing from the Thompson /Hargreaves line.

Thanks for all your info, I thought no-one was ever going to reply. Janet I would love more info from you. The Arthur Thompson I referred to was my Grandad, but probably not the same one you have all talked about. My Grandad was born and brought up in Sutton but then moved away, he farmed at Bolton by Bowland and then in Bury he had 4 children and died in Bury about 15 years ago.My Dad was researching his family history and made numerous visits to Sutton until his death 4 years ago. Any further info would be greatfully received.
