Sutton Amateurs 1948, 1949 and 1950
I've added a new gallery page of photos of Sutton Amateur Dramatics Society's 1948 production of Merrie England, the 1949 production of Gondoliers and the 1950 productions of Quaker Girl and A Waltz Dream. Thanks to Alan Pickles for providing the scans. Do these photos bring back memories for anyone? |

Paul, I just cannot believe this, for I had visitors at the weekend and they wanted me to find a photograph. Whilst looking in the archieves I found your no. 1 picture of Merry England, and have it by my side to try to send to you. Incidently to get this page open, I am lthe page boy just under Queen Elizibeth.
In the Gondoliers I am the third chorus girl from the right.
I did have another picture of Ivy Pickles and Harold Fryers, and will have a go at sending that, though not good at this game. - my first thoughts of sending it with this has gone, but will keep trying. |

What a wonderful set of photographs! 'Do they bring back memories for anyone?' As Fluff used to say, 'Not Arrfff'! There are so many faces which I remember but I'm having trouble putting names to them all.
Stewart Greenwood is one face I recall. Stewart was a brilliant musician; he played the organ at the Baptist Chapel for a while. Was he the Musical Director? He lived with his mother and dad [Edward Greenwood, a local naturalist of repute] in one of the houses opposite the park on Holme Lane. Stewart's younger brother Peter, a good pal of mine [nicknamed Soz] sadly died when only 21. But I digress.... Stewart married Muriel Brown who is pictured on the 1949 photograph.
Michael Garnett, a youthful Gondolier, is someone else I recognise.... and Mary Baker, and Dorothy Bottomley, Rita Sutcliffe [I think], Mary Watkinson. And who could forget Margaret Riley? - Not me for sure!
Perhaps the names are written on the back of the photos? It would be great if they could be published.

The photos were loaned to me by Rene Brooksbank nee Robinson. She can name every one on every picture. Give me a ring and I will tell you how to get in touch.
By the way I think that Brenda Holmes and Joyce Sandham are on the front row at the left of the picture of the full cast of the one with Michael Garnet in. ( can you follow that or are you too busy drooling over Miss Riley as was ?)

In The Quaker Girl, J. Stuart Greenwood took the part of Captain Charteris - a Kings messanger. The Music Director was a Mr H.T. Broughton Diana |

My Mother Alice Watcham was in the Quaker Girl ,The Gondoliers and Merrie England, and the Waltz Dream I wish I had the photos. Mummis now 92yrs old and might be the oldest living member but I don't know but thanks for the memories of the good singers and actors also Mr Harold Broughton the musical director of a lot of the shows that I was in. Also my Headmaster in St Thomas's Church School.
And I think in Merrie England my mother took the part of the Queen but I could be wrong |

Having spoken to my mother alice tempest as she was known in 1929 when she took part in pocahontas as a 14 yr old and then from that she became a member of sutton amateur dramatics it wuld be nice if anyone new her.She was a comedian in later years and I can remeber Ivy Pickles ad Harold Fryer while growing upin Sutton . I hope that someone somewhere remebers her. Also can remeber Elsie Fordham, Florence Bottomley and Dorothy Hustwick nee Smith and ots more Mum told me about them. Thanks to you all

Hi Susan. I vaguely remember you and your mum. My mum Nellie Spencer nee Simpson , her aunt & uncle Martha Ellen & Harry Ackroyd were all involved in the amateurs probably in the 1930's to 1950's.They all lived in Hazel Grove Road & then later moved to Knowle Court Farm when my mum married my dad Frank Spencer in 1950. I wonder if your mum remembers them, also my grandma Edith Simpson, although I'm not sure if she was actually involved in the amateurs. I have several photos of productions they were in, will have to find them. My mum died in 1966 but she would have been around the same age as yours. She was born in 1913. |

I remember Elsie Fordham very well-she was a long standing member of St Thomas' Church Choir.
I was friendly with her son Ralph who was a server at church. Does any one know what happened to them- they seemed to leave the district. Ralph and his father had pigeons in a loft in the allotments up Cragg Lane and I used to see them when I took my dog for rambles up that way |
