Hi Maurice,
Your History of "Flamingos" brings back memories of my teenage years when I lived in Sutton.
I was touched by your thoughts and memories of Glyn - I was friendly with him and his younger sister Kitty when they lived in Wighill Street he was a lovely lad.

I also remember your Raymond well as he was in same class as me at School, and of course Vik Longbottom being a Sutton Lad.

cheers

Hello David
I remember you well-----If I remember correctly I think you had two brothers who were twins (Michael and Raymond??) and a sister Christine I believe?

Hi Maurice
Your memory is spot on - Michael has returned to Sutton but I am afraid Raymond passed away a couple of years ago.

Christine is well and has lived Accrington / Blackburn all her married life. I guess you are the same age as Christine.

How time flies!

Hi Maurice, hopefully scanner coming on Tuesday.
You'll like these, especially the one of yourself, Ray (singing) and Glyn in action.
Taken in the hall we practised, and in colour ha ha.
I've prepared a brief description of what I've done since leaving the Flamingo's.
Not sure if the editor will accept it or not, local old gits may find it interesting.

Jeff.

Hi Maurice, could I trouble you to let me know the year Glyn died if you can remember, also his age when he died.
The chap that's writing the book on local bands has asked me for this as he's giving Glyn a mention.
Paul's got the photo's I've scanned to add to the website in a few days time.

Regards
Jeff.

Hi Rachel, thanks for that, I didn't even know he married, I guess we all sadly lost touch. He was very gentle with me in those early days, I guess it was his nature, He'd be 5 years older than me and was a great influence, not just his talent on the guitar but a really nice person.
I'm afraid the book will only display a short few words about your Dad.
Here is the info I gave the author (his death in 1986 will be added)
""The Flamingos" first group (1960/1962)
Jeff - rhythm guitar aged 14 (Crosshills)
Glyn Whiteoak - lead guitar aged 19 (Sutton)
Brothers Morris Atkinson - bass guitar aged approx.20 (Sutton)
Ray Atkinson - drums/vocals aged approx.20 (Sutton)

The group played only instrumentals when I joined, mostly Shadows and The Ventures.
Glyn was a very accomplished guitarist who sadly died in 1986 at the young age of 45.
Glyn had the biggest collection of 45's and LP's I'd ever seen, he was a lovely man.
Our audiences were a little frustrated at there being no singer so our drummer Ray took on this role as a front man and I had the difficult job of learning the drums.

Venues I can remember
South Craven School Youth club
The group had no transport, but the school was only 100 yards from where we practiced.
We were able to transport our equipment using a wheel barrow.

Coronation Hotel Gisburn
Private function so we were able to have our equipment sent with the bus that was taking the guests"
Just how much of the above will be mentioned I'm not sure, certainly there'll be a photo.
I'll keep you in mind when it's completed.

Regards
Jeff.

Hello Jeff....can you adjust some details with your book friend.
"Morris" should be "Maurice"---Ray was 17. We were both from Crosshills! Thanks.

Hi David, wonder if you knew my sister Margery Birtley.
She'd be 1 year older than you and in Mr. Bells class.
Mr. Bell always gave me a hard time because my sister was brighter than me ha ha.
I know one year at that age is a big leap.
Like yourself she went on to KGGS.
She's still alive and kicking and is a real treasure bless her.

Jeff.

Hello David...Vic was never actually in the band, he used to hang out occasionally with Glyn and myself. This was before the band was formed. As far as I know Vic is still playing guitar---I think he may have been involved in the "jam sessions " at the Bay Horse. I still see Vic and his brother Bill now and again at Keighley Blues Club.

Hi Maurice, it's Jeff Birtley here, hope you're still alive and kicking, I'm 64 now ha ha.
Chuffed you remember me playing with The Flamingo's.
I too remember Glyn and like yourself was invited to his home on many occasions listening to his records, I was mesmorised
as I'd never seen so many.
He was excellent on the guitar, never understood how he could play it with the strings so far away from the frets
Glyn was a quiet lovely chap and I was sad to hear he'd passed away.
You were all far more advanced than me musically and I was thankful for the opportunity to learn from you.
Your reference to me leaving the band was, do you remember ? I was trying to improve my guitar playing and started performing with some local singers etc
that entertained the old age pensioners clubs.
I used to put the rhythm guitar on a Grundig TK20 and play the tune over it, they loved it, well I was only 15 at the time.
The reason I left was that you didn't like me doing this and gave me an ultimatum to choose them or the band.
I guess I wasn't happy with that so I left.
Don't get me wrong I don't bear a grudge, far from it I thoroughly enjoyed our times together.
Remember when I went on the drums to let Ray up front singing, it must have been painful for all of you ha ha.
I've three cracking photo's of yourself Ray and Glyn in action, the band posing and a live shot of all of us with me on the drums.
A writer from Bradford called Derek Lister is doing another book about the early local bands.
I've given him some info about myself and the Flamingo's will get a mention.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Jeff.
