Demolition of Bairstow's Mill 1996
Interesting and poignant pictures in the gallery of the demolition of Bairstow’s Mill in 1996

At the time I had no idea that the mill had been demolished. Then in the summer of 1997 I visited the UK on holiday from Adelaide and of course headed straight to Sutton-in-Craven at the earliest convenience.

It was about 5.00am on a Sunday morning as I threw a left at the Eastburn turnoff and headed down Sutton Lane in my hire car. Driving down the lane and looking towards Sutton I had this surreal sensation that something just wasn’t right, but I couldn’t work out what it was. Then when I got opposite the cricket pitch it abruptly hit me – literally my spine tingled and my heart wrenched as I realized - “JESUS BLOODY CHRIST, THE MILL’S GONE!”

It was just the shock of seeing arguably Sutton’s greatest landmark (aside from the pinnacle) no longer there.

Well Andrew I got the same feeling in '96 when I came over to the UK and was drawn - and I still am - to Sutton. No Mill and no
lake that always had a pair of swans. By the way, I came from beautiful Melbourne, not sleepy old Adelaide!
