German POW's
Recenly on YORKSGEN there was a question asked re above and I remember a few of our local farms had POW workers. Does any one remember their camp they came from? Skipton?
My auntie in Long ends Lane farm in Cowling had "Willie" and Helliwell's had Mathieos? My mum and dad and Helliwells were good to them and for many years a box of chocolates plus other goodies ie biscuits etc arrived at Xmas. Any body remember them?

Hello again David,
I can only vaguely remember the P.O.W.s but have memories of them working around various farms in the village. They were a mixture of German and Italian men and were housed at the camp on the outskirts of Skipton near to Embsay. This was changed eventually to a caravan park. One that does stick in my mind and he was a smashing chap, was Harry Haupt. He had the photographic shop in the wooden hut at the Crosshills end of Holme Lane.He was a helpful, jolly and knowledgeable guy, always willing to advise on photographic problems and always ready to natter. I think that the others must have gone home when the opportunity presented itself.

Yes Mr Haupt was very helpful, we used to get all our photo's developed by him and he was always full of good photographic advice. His son Hadrian Haupt was in the year above me at school.

Not all of the other POWs went back to their homeland after the war Alan, I used to work with a bloke from Eastburn with the surname of Bretton back in 1977, I just can't think of his Christian name. I think it had a dolf like Rudolf or Adolf...no, I don't think it was Adolf.

Anyway, Mr Bretton and myself were both weavers at Matthews at the time and like Mr Haupt, he was a lovely chap. His son Peter was in my class at South Craven.

As for the others, maybe they did go home when the opportunity arose.

I thought Mr Haupt was called Harold. I remember him well and he taught me alot about photography. When my photos had been developed he would go through each one and tell me what I had done wrong or right as the case may be. Sometimes he would reminis and he said that they, as german POW's, were given guns to go out of the camp and shoot rabits for their dinner. The way he descrided where the camp was was in the concrete huts which was part of Craven College in the 1980's and just below (Skipton side) of the new head office block of Skipton Building Socirty.
