Dear All,

Following the offer of £20,250 put forward to purchase 9.85 acres of woodland by the Parish Council on behalf of residents. £18,500 of which was raised by pledges from residents and £1,750 pledged by the Parish Council. A letter was received today from Windle Beech Winthorp, Chartered Surveyors which states the following,

"I refer to your recent offer for the above land. I am afraid that this has not been successful.

If the sale does not proceed to a satisfactory conclusion then I will keep your offer on the file and revert to you."

The Parish Council would like to thank everyone who pledged and should the sale not proceed and the offer reverts back to the Parish Council we hope we still can count on your support and pledges.

Thank you

If the sale does not proceed to a satisfactory conclusion (because no other buyer is involved – which I strongly suspect is the case) then why would it be reverted back to the Parish Council?

The original asking price in excess of 20,000 pounds has been met and offered in timely fashion and now it has been declined. I’d be inclined to tell Windle Beech Winthorp, Chartered Surveyors to ‘take it or leave it’ (or words to that extent)

I can only assume that another party has offered more than the Parish Council - there's no other logical reason why a bid in excess of the asking price would be refused. Why anyone else would want to purchase the land is a mystery to me in view of the location, steepness of the land and the fact that all the trees are protected. The rights of way will have to be maintained and available for all users, so perhaps we have a wealthy benefactor after all. I'm all for Andrew's suggestion in his second paragraph - but if WBW do revert to us, perhaps we should lower our offer?

What a disappointment for us all - but I guess it isn't over yet, until the other buyer (fictitious or not) takes the next step.
Back in July - 15th I think, the council advised .........Following consultation with the Estate Agent. The Parish Council are aware another offer has been put in for the land and needs to act. An amount of time is also required to collect in the pledge money..........And, that pledge money arrived - well done everyone.
It has been a well supported cause, considering the short time lapse since it started, and the people of the village could be pleased that so many are prepared to put their hands in their pockets for them and the future villagers. Now we can just hope that
a. the other offer falls over
b. that Andrew is right and there is -no other offer...

I would also like to commend the council for its prompt advice in both its response to pledges and to advising the outcome. They appear to have been committed to dealing with this in a professional manner. Being at the opposite end of the world and time zone it is good to have such immediate advice. As always Paul is up with the play and so thanks to you too Paul.

I reckon there is another offer. For an estate agent to turn down an offer above the asking price (in the current market situation) would be rather silly.
It is a bit strange though---as others have said, the trees are protected, rights of way are protected, historical site is protected. In other words the land is not much good to anyone, apart from the people of Sutton for recreational purposes.

I see that the sale boards have gone from West Lane - do we yet know the outcome of the sale?

To put villagers' minds at rest, I have it on good authority that there will be no changes as regards Lumb Clough.

Hi Paul, is it known whether the land ended up being sold to a higher bidder, or whether the original owner had a change of heart and decided not to sell?

Hi Andrew - according to the Windle Beech Winthrop site, it's sold subject to contract.

Mysterious-er and mysterious-er! but - so long as it remains available to the village that is the important bit - Now, what is that saying...all will be revealed 'in the fullness of time'.. Do you get the feeling that there is more to be told ?

Well the whole saga feels to have ended in a bit of an anticlimax, a bit of a fizzer (for me anyway).

But it has been good as I've been reminded to walk up the Clough more often and also it feels as if I've gained money, not actually having to part with my pledge.
