my paternal grandparents, tommy & mary lived at 8 harker st, from the late twenties up until the early seventies. Mary's mum & dad (banks) lived two doors away but i don't remember what number. tommy used to work in the co-op and mary in the mill. across the street lived a very friendly Italian family who's young son would have been about 8 or 9 in 1969 and went by the name of antony/tony. when i was in mr Laycock's class circa 1965/66?? i had to deliver a message to number 1 harker street, something to do with an absent student??? sorry i can't be more specific. i'll try a few relatives & mum to see if they know, as my father is now deceased.

Further re: Harker Street. Amy Marchant (later Saddler) was my aunt. During my childhood in the late nineteen forties and early fifties Amy actually lived at No1. Well Street, which in those days was back to back with No1. Harker Street. However, Amy actually finished up in the seventies and early eighties living both at No1 Well Street, and No1 Harker Street, when the two houses were knocked through into one.

And message for Phillip Gill. Alice Marchant (later Snookes) being Amy Marchants' sister together with brother Eric (my father) makes your mother my cousin I would have thought. Not close family perhaps, but you do still have some living in Sutton.
Mind you, I am bus-pass eligable so ???

Alice Marchant (later Snookes) was my mother's cousin. My mother was Constance (Connie) Phillips, nee Tingle. I live in Vancouver, Canada but lived in Sutton as a small girl until we emigrated to Canada in 1947 when I was almost 4 years of age.

Hello Lynda, Yes, I am familiar with yourself and Connie, Phillipps, Tingles. Their names floated around our house at 27 Croft Sreet, Glusburn. (just up the road) during my childhood. I was actually born in Sutton in 1948 at 23,Eastfield Place opposite Alice and Arthurs' house at 16 North Street. I remember a letter from your family arriving every year at Xmas. Hows Vancouver? And do you know the whereabouts (E-Mail, postal address etc) of Stephen Snookes? Last heard of in Canada about 20 years ago. After Ronnie Snookes and Rita emigrated to Canada I met Stephen, Graham and a sister who's name now escapes me in about 1960 during a trip back over here with Rita. Later Stephen came over again on his own in about 1970/1
At the time he said he was working for someone who erected trade exhibtion stands etc. Around southern England. He promised me a pair of boots from Poland at that time...I havn't received them yet, never mind. Would be good to hear from you. Best regards. PS. Spelling and punctooation attroshus...comes with age.

Hello Melvyn: Vancouver is great, a wonderful place to live. My husband and I do visit England every couple of years as my husband has family in Manchester and I have family in Gargrave. I'm sorry I have no idea of the whereabouts of Stephen Snookes. His sister's name was Andrea and I belive both Graham and Andrea are married but we lost touch with them many many years ago.
With regard to the Christmas letter you mentioned, I used to type them up for my mother for many years.
Best wishes.

Hi David, yes I'm still going strong although I can't help you regarding who lived at No 1 Harker St.
I was only on a visit when I took the photographs, we had moved away from Sutton in 1950, so I didn't know anyone there in the 60's when the shots were taken.
I remember living there, and I wonder if you and I ever played out in Harker St when we were toddlers, we probably did as I was born there in the same year as you. My surname was Happs then and I lived there with my mother Violet, my sister Barbara and my brother Geoff.
Could I ask Kevin McVay if any of his relatives remember us, my mum would probably have known your grandmother Mary, I can't ask her now though as she died some years ago. I bet my brother remembers the McVay family though. (Geoff - if you read this perhaps you could remember who lived in Harker St when we did and add a few names to the list?)

Sorry but Mary and Jimmy Peace definitely lived at No.1 Harker
Street during the war and after, probably until sometime during the 50's. Mary was my mother's sister and I spent many, many wonderful holidays in Sutton during my childhood and later. They eventually moved to Ravenstone Gardens but can't remember exactly when. Barry Pearce could probably confirm this.

Hi, I am Andrea and I just typed in my name and I see it is mentioned several times. My mother was Rita and my father Ronald Arthur Snookes - his parents were Alice (Marchant) & Arthur Snookes who lived in Sutton. My brothers are Stephen & Graham my twin. Graham lives in London, Ontario and has 2 daughters from his 1st marriage and 2 daughters from his second marriage - he is active in marathons along with his wife Janet. Graham no longer goes by the name Snookes but DeVeber, who was our step father. I live in North Bay, Ontario Canada I have 3 children 2 boys and a girl and one & 1/2 grand daughters (one due in April) I also remember my visits to Sutton - especially to my grandma's (Alice) she was just such a wonderful person I wish I had known her better - I did travel to England 3 times during my teens & 20's - Unfortunately we have also lost contact with my brother Stephen he goes by the name "Snux" now but I do believe he lives in the Espanola area of Northern Ontario. Rita (mother Aileen O'Neil and father Willy Baldwin)is also living in North Bay, Ontario in a seniors retirement home. As you must be aware my dad, Ronald (Ronnie) passed away when we were children.
We travelled from Vancouver to Toronto area, to Florida, then back to Toronto area and then after my dad died went to Thunder Bay where I met my husband.
I don't have much contact with my cousins Philip, Ronald & Shirley and certainly would be happy to hear from them if they would like. I still get a Christmas card from my Auntie Sylvia. It is my hope to get my now retired husband to England in the near future.

Hi Andrea:

I remember you and your brothers as small children when you lived in Vancouver, where I still live. My Mum and Dad, Connie and Frank Phillips, and I went on many Sunday car trips with your family in the 1950s. I have some black and white photos of you and your brothers as small children, also your Mum and Dad. If you would like copies, just let me know and I will scan them for you.

My husband, children and I visited your Grandma and Grandad Snookes several times and always enjoyed our time spent with them.
All the best.

Thank you so much Lynda - If you have pictues it would be lovely - I have very few left and those I do have are not in good condition - with all the moving we did they didn't stay in good condition, I found them and have them in albums now but some are badly damaged. I do not have a picture of myself & my dad at all. I will print your note and bring it along to my mother's and see if she remembers your parents. I am quite sure she will as her memory is sharp as a tack. Thank you once again. Andrea Raftis (nee Snookes)

Hello Andrea, I am your half cousin living here in Sutton. I can remember your family emigrating to Canada...just, would that be just your Mum and Dad with Stephen? I would be about three years old at the time, in fact if I remember rightly there would be about a week difference in my age and that of your Stephen. I have a photo somewhere, but can't find it at the moment, of Stephen and I think me on Alice Snookes' front doorstep at 16 North Street here in Sutton, I'll have to date it at 1950ish and think Rita is standing there too. Will try and find it but may take a while.

I remember your Mum, yourself, Stephen and Graham coming over here for a visit in about 1961 possibly, I just have a feeling that thats the wrong year, perhaps your Mum will be able to put me right on that one. During your visit I remember your Mum driving us about a bit in a black Morris 1000 or maybe even 850cc car, would this belong to Mr. Baldwin?

I'm afraid that I have also lost contact with Stephen, the last time I met him was a couple of times in the very early seventies when I think he worked over here as a lorry driver errecting exhibition stands up and down the country with the odd trip across the water to Europe, nothing since. I've also lost contact with Sylvia, she moved house a few years ago, sent me the new address, but I promptly lost it, ah well??? probably an age thing.

Have to leave now, I still live in the Ravenstone Gardens area about fifty yards from where Alice and Arthur lived at No.14, I'm at No.3. Best regards, and would you please pass my regards to your Mum.

Hi Andrea:

I have found the pictures but they were small black and white ones and wouldn't scan very well, so today I took them to Staples and had them enlarged and printed. I did Google 411 on your name and wonder if you live on Pearce Street in North Bay. If that's your address. I will mail the photos to you and then can tell you what I remember about the location and people in them.

Your paternal grandmother, Alice Snookes (nee Marchant), was my mother's cousin. I think your Grandma's mother was my Grandad Tingle's sister.

Take care and all the best.

Hi Lynda,

Yes that sounds about right, I remember my dad referring to your family as "his cousin/s in Canada". Further to that and the photo that you sent to the gallery here of the old Sutton Scout Troop, I have another one. My dad (Eric) appears on it. The very pale and washed-out pencil writing on the reverse of the origional says "Sutton Scouts Barnoldswick Gala 1932." Dad would have been sixteen at that time, and there are three or four adult Scout Leaders on the photo.
Would it be of any interrest to you?

Mel.

PS the old Scout Hut in the chapel yard here in Sutton survived, in quite good condition for its age, until about the late 1960's. Alas no pictures.

Hi Melvyn:

Yes I would be interested in seeing the Scouts photo. Perhaps you can scan it to the webmaster and he can put it in the gallery. I have not had any other replies about the one I put in the gallery, so I don't know who the others are.

Would anyone know if our grandfather, Arthur Snookes, had Parkinson's Disease? Unfortunately, because dad died so young, we don't really have a medical history of that side of the family. My brother Graham vaguely remembers Mom mentioning this years ago, but we aren't sure. Graham is being treated for a medical condition and this is one of the questions he has been asked? Thank you, if anyone might know the answer to this it would be so appreciated. Andrea

Hello again Andrea,
In all the time that I knew uncle Arthur, until he left Sutton and Cross Hills ten, maybe twelve years ago to move nearer to Sylvia in the Northallerton area of North Yorkshire, I can safely say that from the observations of a lay person such as myself, Arthur did not suffer from Parkinsons desease. He was also very skilled in the art of cake icing, they were beautiful, and very intricately done...not the symptoms of Parkinsons? I would have thought.
That I'm afraid is pretty well all that I can help you with, I can't remember my Gran having anything of the sort, or for that matter Grandad either but there again I was only nine years old when he died...but I can never remember him shaking or anything like that. Amy, Alice and Dad were all OK, and as far as I know so am I, although some might disagree in some areas here. I hope this has been helpful to yourself and Graham.
Best regards,
Melvyn.

Hi Andrea
Checked for the death of Arthur Snookes who died in 2000 aged 96yrs, born the 25th June 1903 at Hemsworth. I would have thought that if he had Parkinson's he would not have reached such a good age like that without it being very noticeable.

Hi Andrea:

We visited your grandfather when he was in Sutton a couple of years before he moved to Northallerton and there was no signs whatsoever of Parkinson's Disease at that time. He moved well, was bright and alert. In fact he could hike up and down to the Strid faster than we could!

I hope you got the pictures I sent.

Take care. Lynda

Hello Andrea,
I can back-up these remarks from Lynda and Josie. I can remember watching Arthur many times during what would be his mid-eighties, walking steadily along the main street in Cross Hills to the shops for his daily odd's and end's, with a gait that spoke volumes, upright, shoulders back with both arms swinging, apparently giving the message "mess with me if you want to...but". For a man of his age he always looked very robust.
He actually came from the village of Fitzwilliam in South yorkshire, maybe that is why he loved his cricket so much (Boycott) Fitzwilliam would be within the Hemsworth registration district.

I am still alive. I remember being 13 or 14 and visiting you in the sixties. you gave me my first drink (cider), forty some years later I took my last. The bit in between tends to be a bit hazy.
I finally pulled it together. I am IT area manager for a newspaper chain in Canada.

Hello Snux,
If you are who I think you are, how the devil are you? I'd almost given up on ya and begun to wonder if you'd passed through the gates. Funny also that I too was thinking of retiring when I'm ninety if I can afford to, must try and arrange a joint celebration in about thirty years time.
Going to sign off now but will be back . Mel.
