Great War photos needed of men listed on Sutton war memorial
During the Great War, 40 young men from Sutton lost their lives and their names subsequently listed on the village war memorial.

The book ‘Cravens Part in the Great War’ published in 1919 features photographic army portraits of 27 of these deceased servicemen. During the past 3 years photographs of Samuel (Harry) Lund in army uniform and Frederick Simpson in civilian clothing have come to light bringing the total to 29 photographs.

This means we have 11 soldiers listed on the Sutton war memorial with no photographic image or reminder of what they looked liked. These soldier’s names and last known place of residence are as follows:

STANLEY ARCHIBALD – Main Street
JOHN DAVY – 2 Daisy Place
EVELYN FISHER – Hazel Grove
WALTER HAGGAS – 23 Daisy Croft (family emigrated to Oneida County, USA in 1912)
ARNOLD HEELEY – 16 Eastfield Place
PERCY STELL – 15 Gordon Street
THOMAS SUMMERSKILL – 5 Lister Hill
FREDERICK WILLIAM THOMPSON – Harker Street
ALBERT TUNE – 20 Main Street
AMOS WAGSTAFF – 5 Tetley Row
RICHARD WHITEHALL – 2 Wighill Street

I think it would be an appropriate and lasting tribute to the ultimate sacrifice these men made if relatives & descendents of these ‘anonymous’ 11 servicemen are able to bestow a photographic image of what they looked liked. There is now a dedicated website focusing on ‘Cravens Part in the Great War’ which is run by volunteers such as Chris Foster where additional photos & information can be added & preserved at http://www.cpgw.org.uk/

The problem being of course that nearly 100 years has now lapsed since these men were killed in battle. Therefore if this current generation is not able to photographically identify who these men were it may never happen.

So please, before it’s too late I’m asking you to review the 11 names above. If you or your friends, or any of your parents, grandparents, great grandparents or other relatives share a surname with any of them, please dust off the old photo box in the attic and have a quick check. Even a portrait of an unknown soldier may be potentially identified by the regimental cap badge and other insignia they are wearing.

Thank you - fingers crossed!

Well due to a lot of persistence, images of the following 3 soldiers listed on the Sutton war memorial have FINALLY come to light:

STANLEY ARCHIBALD
THOMAS SUMMERSKILL
RICHARD WHITEHALL (plus a photo of his brother Thomas who survived the war)

I'll be updating their individual profiles shortly.

A WW1 photo of John Davy has now been discovered thanks to the Davy family and Robin Longbottom for prompting the search.

The updated profile of Pte John Davy can be viewed in the Local Information section under ‘The Fallen of Sutton-in-Craven’.

With the recent discovery of 3 more missing photos (Stanley Archibald, Thomas Summerskill & Richard Whitehall) in the Keighley News archives, there remain only 7 photos missing:

EVELYN FISHER
WALTER HAGGAS
ARNOLD HEELEY
PERCY STELL
FREDERICK WILLIAM THOMPSON
ALBERT TUNE
AMOS WAGSTAFF

Keighley library are apparently about to acquire a new whiz-bang state of the art over-head scanning machine. This should enable much better quality scans to be taken of the pictures of Stanley Archibald, Thomas Summerskill & Richard Whitehall, at which point their individual profiles will be updated.
